Happy New Year.

Please remember that Monday is an Inset Day.

Friday – Pantomime trip. The children will need a snack for the interval. Can we please remember that we are encouraging healthy snacks such as fruit or healthy snack bars. Thank you.

RE
This week we will be learning about the Wise men and the Epiphany. We will also be starting our new topic on BOOKS. We will be brainstorming all the different types of books we have.

Phonics
Year 2 will be continuing with phase five and learning phonemes with alternative sounds.
This week we are concentrating on CH – URE, TURE


 
Maths Year 2
This week we will be learning about FRACTIONS.

We will be learning the names of different fractions such as half, third, fifth, tenth etc.

The children will be finding fractions of shapes and fractions of numbers.

 
We will also be practising telling the time every week.

Year 2 English
This week we will be concentrating on grammar and handwriting.
We will be learning about verbs and adding ed as a suffix to make the past tense. We will be practising our joined up style of handwriting.


Year 1 / 2 Maths
This week in maths we will be using number lines and 100-square grids to work out one more and one less than 2-digit numbers.  The mathematical vocabulary the children will be learning is ‘more than’ and ‘less than’.

Children in year 2 will also be comparing numbers of greater value using the vocabulary ‘more than’ and ‘less then’ but they will also learn how to compare numbers using < and >.

We will re-visit counting in 10’s, look at properties of numbers (for example – what can the children tell us about the number 24) as well as learn about ordinal numbers (e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on).

Maths Year 1
This week we will be learning about quarter hours of the time. We will be putting hands on a clock and be learning about the different sizes of hands and what they mean.

Year 1 English
The children will be learning about segmenting words and syllables contained in a word. The children will also be doing handwriting.

Topic
Being British
For the next part of our topic we will be finding out about the queen and her role as the monarch of  our country. We will be finding out that she is our longest reigning monarch and that she celebrates her 90th birthday next year.
