This week we will be continuing the theme  Songs and Repetitive Poems.  Share Move it, Conversation and I’m the Youngest in this House . We will be reading  each poem aloud to the children encouraging them to join in.  We will be discussing what makes a good performance of a poem, highlighting intonation and expression.  Model reading a poem in a monotone voice, then using expression.  We will be asking the children to say which performance they prefer and why?


The children will be learning a poem by heart and understanding how  full stops and capital letters are used differently when writing poetry.

The children will be trying to solve ‘real-life’ problems involving money (change)

The year 1 children will be  adding and subtracting 9 by adding and subtracting 10.

 

The year 2 will be starting to add and begin to subtract a 1-digit number to and from a multiple of 10 and 100.

Come and See

 

We will continuing with the topic called “Neighbours” which is a CAFOD based topic.

We will go outside and lead children into this shared reflective activity: Stand in a space. Close your eyes. Think about yourself in your space. What can you hear? Now open your eyes and look around you. What do you see? What do you see above you? If you were here tonight, what would you see above you? What are you standing on? Look around you. Look at the people who share this space with you. You are a neighbour to each one. There is only one sun, one sky, one world. We share all these with one another.

 

Back in class/gathered together, share the story of King David, who wrote a psalm about the sky that we share with all our neighbours. This story imagines when and why he wrote it.

One morning, King David woke up very early. Everything was bright and beautiful. Even though he could not see it, he knew the sun had risen in the sky. David was a good king. He often thought about the people that he was a neighbour to, all the people who lived in his land.

He thought about them looking up at the same sky, seeing the same sun, feeling the same light and warmth as himself. “How wonderful God is!” he thought. He knew the golden sun spread the message of God‟s love for neighbours all over the world. He wanted his people to know this too.

The sky above tells how wonderful God is.

Every day it is there for us to see.

Every morning the golden sun appears shining on everyone,

Some key questions we will be asking the children:

 How does the sky tell us how wonderful God is?

 Why does looking at the sky help us to think about neighbours everywhere?

 We have friends and neighbours throughout the world. They are called our global neighbours/friends. Why are people in our own and other countries all our neighbours?

 How do we show God‟s love to our neighbours?

 

 

 

 

 

Produce a sky at night collage on black paper using silver and gold squares of paper for the stars and moon OR produce a sky during the day collage on blue paper using gold/yellow squares of paper for the sun and white/grey for the clouds. Choose the appropriate line from the psalm to stick next to the collage. Add photographs of global neighbours to show that we all share the same sky, the same world (see cafod.org.uk/comeandsee).

 Ask the children to talk about their favourite part of the psalm and record this in a way of their choice.

 

 

Topic

Our learning challenge is what are man-made materials?

We will be asking the children if they can recall what three materials the three little pigs made their houses out of (straw, sticks and bricks).

On the investigation sheet the children need to write down which house they think will be the strongest and why.

The children enjoyed their transition days on Thursday and Friday.

Literacy

We have completed our work about Julia Donaldson. The children have loved reading her books and wrote their own books reviews about their favourite book.

Over the next fortnight we will be focussing on Songs and Repetitive Poems.  Share A Sailor went to Sea, Move It, This is the Alligator and Pirate Ship. Maths

This week in Maths we will be learning about time. We will be learning the analogue time and digital time.

 

The Year 1 children will learning to  read the time to the hour and half hour on analogue clocks. They will a Begin to use units to measure time: minutes

The Year 2 will be using units of time: hours, minutes, seconds and starting to read the time to the quarter hour on analogue and digital clocks.

Come and See

 We will starting a new topic called “Neighbours” which is a CAFOD based topic.

We will be introducing the  topic by seating children in a circle. Round the circle, children take turns to answer the question “Who is your neighbour?”

Have individual class photos in a basket in the middle of a circle, or at the front of the class. Put some quiet music on. One by one, children select a photograph without looking at the image. Next, encourage the children to look at their photo and think about how that person is a neighbour to them. When all children have taken a photo, invite them to share their ideas. You could also look at some pictures from the Picture My World website (cafod.org.uk/picturemyworld).

 How is Marie-Dorianne like you?  Marie-Dorianne is not your next door neighbour; she isn‟t a neighbour in your class; she isn‟t a neighbour in your school. Why do you think Marie-Dorianne is your neighbour?  CAFOD helps our neighbours around the world, particularly those who are poor. How has CAFOD helped Marie-Dorianne‟s family?

Children write/copy the name of someone they call their neighbour on a template of a person. Then make the template look like that person. Later, these figures may be displayed joining hands around a large world. Title your display „Neighbours Around Our World‟.    Children use the photograph of their classmate and write about how their classmate is a neighbour to them.   For example:  Daniel is my neighbour because he takes care of me on the playground.  Sophie is my neighbour because she plays with me in the role play area.   Video two children saying how they are neighbours to each other.  Marie-Doriane differentiated worksheet (see cafod.org.uk/comeandsee).     The children will experience 2 transition days in the next year group on Thursday and Friday. We are sure the children will have a great time.   Have a wonderful week.   Year 1/2 Team

Literacy

This week we are continuing with our work on Julia Donaldson. The children will be looking at a variety of Julia Donaldson books and hot seating different characters.

We have many Julia Donaldson books in school but if the children have their own Julia Donaldson books that they would like to share, they can bring them into school. (Please have them labelled with your child's name on it)

We will be looking at the different viewpoints of each character to say why the character has behaved the way it has.


Maths

This week in Maths we will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction with a focus on problem solving.

Year 1 children will be learning to add two 'teens' numbers, not crossing a multiple of 10; subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by counting back and subtract one multiple of 10 from another.

Year 2 children will be learning to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number; add two 2-digit numbers and subtract one 2-digit number from another.

Topic

This week we will start our new topic for this half-term called ‘Recycling’.

 

It is a really interesting topic that largely focuses on science.  So your children will hopefully be coming home with lots of interesting facts to tell you about materials and their properties!

 

In the first lesson the children will be discussing what we mean by ‘materials’ and why this term is often confused with ‘fabric’.  We will learn to categorise what materials objects are made from (wood, glass, metal, fabric, plastic).  They will also start to describe the properties of given materials for example, hard, soft, opaque, transparent and so on.

 

The children will be challenged to think why certain objects are made out of particular materials e.g. a chair is made out of plastic because plastic is strong.  Would a chair made out of jelly be fit for purpose?!  Why are wellington boots not made from tissue paper?  The children have to give justifications for their answers.

Interesting fact – did you know that recycling one glass bottle or jar saves enough energy to power your computer for 20 minutes?  Glass can be recycled again and again – containers made from recycled glass are of the same high quality as those made from new raw materials.

This week we are continuing the topic “Being Sorry.”  We will be exploring choices. Sometimes we choose well and sometimes wrongly.

We will also be revealing that God helps us to choose well and to be sorry. God forgives us.

Read the  Presentation for Isaiah 58 9-11.

·         On a drawing of a large candle ask the children to write words that will show how they can be kind and ‘be a light that shines in the dark’.

Weekly Update 8th June

Welcome Back everyone! We hope that you had a wonderful break and we are looking forward to hearing about everything the children have been doing in the holidays.


This week we will be starting a new cross curricular topic all about 'Superheroes' .

We will be collecting together What we already know about Superheroes and creating descriptive character profiles.

Children will also be creating their own Superheroes. We will be encouraging the children to think about what their character will look like? what their superhero powers will be? how do they help others?

Information:

Literacy/ Topic:

This week we are continuing with our work on speech marks. It is assessment week, so we will be reviewing all grammar work we have covered this half term.

Last week in our topic work, we planted Sunflower seeds, so we will be revisiting how to write a good set of instructions, explaining How to Plant a Sunflower Seed. We will be encouraging the children to remember how they planted the seeds step by step.

Maths:

This week we will be looking at 'Telling the Time' We will be learning how to:

 * Read the time to the hour and half hour on analogue clocks.
* Use units of time and know the relationship between them: hours, minutes and seconds.

Weekly update 11th May

This week the Year 2s are continuing with their SATs Tests. We are very proud of all of our children and are impressed on such a positive attitude to learning.

What are we learning this week?

English

This week the children are learning about the beginning, middle and end of a story and using this skill to write a recount. The children have had lots of practice writing connectives and adjectives and will be encouraged to include these in their writing. The children will be proof reading their work to check they have the correct punctuation and spelling. The children are then looking at speech from the story and using talking partners, creating their own dialogue. The children will learn how to write this dialogue using inverted commas, new speaker, new line and writing who said the speech and how it was said. 
The children will also be completing a reading comprehension and Grammar activities about silent letters and questions.

This week we are continuing the topic “Holidays and Holydays.” We will be exploring that holidays are days to be happy and that they are different from other days. 
We will talk about Ascension day and what Jesus promised to send.

* How did you celebrate them?
The children will retell the story of the Pentecost using appropriate language.
The children will create a stained glass window on a template in the shape of a dove.

Weekly Update: 5th May

Information:
On Friday our school will be celebrating VE Day. All children are invited to come to school wearing Red, White and Blue. Over the week we will be celebrating by exploring different British Cultures, playing traditional games, singing traditional songs, making celebration bunting and if weather permits we will be enjoying a barbeque outside.

English:
This week we will be looking at how to improve our sentences. We will be using 2A sentences. (sentences using 2 adjectives) we will also be brushing up on our grammar and punctuation skills. A reminder that Literacy homework is sentences based on spellings of the week. These spellings are learnt as part of the homework and assessed not by a formal test, but by application of the words into written work over the course of the week.
