Inverse operations
Multiplying by 10
Place value
Division problems
http://resources.woodlands-

We will be completing a mental maths test too.

We will be testing the children on their x 2, x 3  x5, x10 tables. Some children are completing tests with both multiplication and division on them too.
Please make sure that your child has instant recall of these timetables.

English
This week we will be basing all our work around instructions. The children will be learning all about different instructions for making toast, making a jam sandwich and making a cup of tea.

The steps to success will be:

Extra information and pictures.
We are busy testing the exception words all the time.

Phonics
Year 1 and 2 will be continuing with phase five and learning phonemes with alternative sounds. Year 2 will be working through phase six.

The children are busy learning the Years 1 and 2 exception words all the time and these are being tested for reading and spelling constantly. We are playing a spell well game to learn them all too. Ask your child to explain the game spell well.

We will be using phase six phonics too while reviewing phase five phonemes all the time.

Year 1/2
Maths

This week we will focus on solving word problems using all four operations: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.  It is important that your children know their number bonds to 10 and 20 to help them do this efficiently.

We will be completing a mental maths tests too.

The children will be tested on their 10 times tables.  Please make sure that your child has instant recall of these timetables.

English Year 1/2
In Grammar this week the children will be learning about prepositionsPrepositions are linking words in a sentence. We use prepositions to explain where things are in time or space. Prepositions tell us where something is (for example, beside, under, on, against, beneath or over) or when something is happening (for example: until, during, after, before or more specifically 'on Christmas Day', 'at twelve o'clock' or 'in August').

Prepositions usually sit before nouns (or pronouns) to shows the noun's (or pronoun's) relationship to another word in the sentence.

We will read “Goodnight Space” by Michelle Robinson. Discuss the story and how it has been inspired by Tim Peake.

We will show a power point about Tim Peake and his adventures so far.

We will ask the children some key questions below:

·         When did Tim travel into space?

·         How old is Tim?

·         Which country did Tim travel into space from?

·         What jobs has Tim done before he became an astronaut?

·         What did Tim have to do for part of his training?

·         What jobs will he do in space?
We will be looking at the format of different letter writing and the key features of a letter.

In pair what qualities do they think would make them a good candidate to be an astronaut?

The children will apply in writing and explain why they wish to become an astronaut. They need to provide evidence that meets the required personal specifications.

Maths
This week we will be adding 3 numbers where 2 of them are already a pair to 10, such as 3 + 5 + 7 = 15. We will also be adding doubles and near doubles, such as 6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 13. We will also be adding coins and notes together, eg £5.00 + 10p = £5.10. Also we will be completing some measuring of length.

 English
This week we will be completing a reading comprehension and will continue to develop our reading and phonics skills by developing our knowledge of the alternative phonemes. We will be reviewing our knowledge of the alphabet and alphabetical order and we will be completing some nonfiction reading and writing about minibeasts, linking with our Science work.

Year 1/2
English Year 1/2

In Grammar this week the children will be learning about what a compound sentence is.  This builds on our work completed last week, which was about conjunctions. In a compound sentence, two independent clauses (sentences) can be joined by a comma and a conjunction. Each clause has a subject and a verb.

When you are writing, it would be strange to only use short, simple sentences.

‘I do not like eating meat.’ is a simple sentence.

‘I love vegetables.’ is also a simple sentence.

By putting the two sentences together and joining them with a conjunction, we can make a much more interesting compound sentence:

‘I do not like eating meat but I love vegetables.’

We will talk about a new topic - Explanation Texts.

Discuss what the children think an explanation text might be.  Using my own explanation text we will look at features of an explanation text (title- it should include how or why, Intro paragraph, information that has steps and time connectives, pictures to help the reader, conclusion- what happens as a result of this?)

Before we talk about what our explanation will be about, we will show this video.

Watch a short video clip on how bees make honey:

We will be talking about the success criteria of explanation text:

Success Criteria

I used the present tense.

I used a heading in a large, clear font.

My main text is written in the order that things happen.

I used illustrations and diagrams with labels and captions.

I used arrows to show the order things happen.

I used subheadings to give extra information.

I used sentences beginning with a capital letter and ending with a full stop.

Maths Year 1/2

This week we will be reviewing topics that we have noticed the children need reinforcement with.

We will be learning more about right angles, multiplication using repeated addition and fractions of shapes and numbers.

We will be completing a mental maths test.

The children will be tested on their 10 times tables.  Please make sure that your child has instant recall of these timetables.

English
This week we will be learning off by heart the nonsense poem The Owl and The Pussycat by Edward Lear. We will be acting it out in drama and studying the rhyming words and re-writing our own version. Maths
In maths this week we will be focusing on quick recall of addition and subtraction facts - doubles, adding on ten, counting backwards from 100 plus, adding and taking away units. We will also try solving real life word problems including money. We will continue to learn to tell the time and think about times of the day when we complete certain tasks.

http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/money

 Topic

We will continue our new Topic on Habitats.  This topic lends itself to lots of work in science.  This week the children will learn what a habitat is and to be able to name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats.  We will answer the following questions key questions:

What is a habitat? What does the habitat provide for the animals and plants? What is a micro-habitat?
